D. Monett Photography I 25 February 2020 Social Change -- Mental Health In society, mental health is not a commonly talked about for it is a very controversial topic. But what people fail to see is that 1 in 5 adults in the United States deal with a form of mental illness (The State of Mental Health in America). That means that roughly 46 million adults in the United States population struggle with mental illness, and most of those cases are not being treated. Mental health needs to obtain more attention because the rates of mental health are rising, and the stigma within mental health still stays present. Mental health is hard to understand because if you haven't endured mental health, you can't put yourself in the other person's shoes. Children are also experiencing mental health issues along with the adult population. Following the rates for adults, 1 in 5 teenagers deal with at least ONE mental health disorder between the ages of 12 to 18 (Polaris Teen). As these teens are dealing with mental health disorders, there isn't enough awareness available for the topic. Since the awareness of mental health is limited roughly 64% of teenagers deal with their mental health untreated (The State of Mental Health in America). If more awareness to mental health was created, there could be an extreme decrease in numbers of people affected by a mental health disorder. Actions have been taken in the past 50 years to take steps towards helping mental health disorders. For example, schools are starting to make mental health programs to make teens more aware of mental health, and for teens to feel like they have a place to go if they ever need help. As well as, Mental Health America was created as a non-profit organization to aid people who struggle with mental health (MHA). I believe that the topic of mental health needs to have more awareness. I believe this because I feel as if people affected by mental health shouldn’t have to struggle, they should be able to talk openly about what they are dealing with and be accepted for it. I think that my photographs will affect this form of change because it will allow people to realize the determinants of mental health, and possibly make change after seeing the truth about mental health.
